Trust is a critical part of any relationship because without it, you don't really have a relationship!
That being said, there is a common ms-conception that trust is an all or nothing thing, which it is NOT. Trust is earned over a period of time. Trustworthy behavior earns trust.
If you know someone's history and you feel you have reason not to trust them, that is how you feel. Now you have to decide what to do with those feelings. Here are some options:
1) Give him the benefit of the doubt because you care about him. That is OK to do that but probably best to watch carefully too.
2) Don't trust him. Tell him you are having trouble trusting him because of his background. Maybe watch more carefully than you would otherwise. Build trust over time by trusting him in little things and see how it goes.
